Artificial Skin

Did you Know?

  • In extreme burn cases, for example, people who are 80% to 90% burnt cannot have a surgery. Often the donor is not healthy and does not match the requirements to donate their skin (A14).

  • Scientists figured out that artificial skins reduces the appearance of wrinkles and restore the youth appearance. The grafted skin showed its effect for only about 24 hours. After, it started to show wrinkles. With this, scientists can go further in researching and create graft skins that does not wrinkle (A15).

What is Artificial Skin Graft?

Scientists use a cell called Keratinocytes to make artificial skins. It helps to build the very top layer of the skin. The cell also emits a chemical signal of activating skin growth. Unfortunately, burn victims cannot receive artificial skin surgery because there is a high possibility of rejecting the new skin and cause serious problems. Burke and Yennas made it easier to transplant skin to burn victims but there were still some consequences. Recently, scientists came up with an idea of using skin cells to make artificial skin so that they will reduce the chance of failure (A13).
