Artificial Heart

Transplant is required when a heart fails to pump the blood in both ventricles to sustain their body. The process of implanting an artificial organ is by removing the ventricles, both left and right. Then, they cut the four valves in the heart, remaining atria, aorta and pulmonary artery intact. They replace the organ with a man-made heart to let it function back to normal (A1).

Did you Know?

24-years-old Stan Larkin was experiencing a heart failure. Thankfully, he was able to receive artificial heart surgery and successfully completed. Unlike the others who had to stay in the hospital after their transplant surgery, Stan was able to leave the hospital with a portable heart device. The device was connected with 2 tubes that exited out of his body. The tubes helped the heart to pump the blood regularly for Stan. He was the first one to leave the hospital with an artificial heart. Unfortunately, his brother, Dominique Larkin, 23 was also experiencing severe heart disease. Later, he had a heart transplant surgery and both Stan and Dominique were able to live after. Portable artificial heart made Stan live like a normal person and live outside of the hospital which they could not do before. His story brought hopes for people who also suffered with severe heart diseases (A2).
